One of the main difficulties with dealing with healthcare issues within the current system is the need and necessity for the healthcare professional to provide an appropriate diagnosis within the earliest stages of admission and treatment. This need is important not only for the overall health and wellness of the patient but also for the ability of the hospital to correctly define and collect upon the insurance payments associated with the different diseases or illnesses that are exhibited within the patient. Due to the fact that many cursory overviews of the patient’ s situation has led to healthcare professionals to either misdiagnosis or miss the prevalence entirely of a range of skin disorders, this ultimately translates into many insurance providers refusing to pay for treatment of disease or illnesses that they believe have ultimately occurred within the hospital itself. As a function of the fast turn around and rapid admission and treatment that is indicative of so many hospitals these days, the overall ability of the healthcare professional to spend the amount of time required and necessary to diagnose and understand the full gamut of issues exhibited within the patient is necessarily reduced. However, there are key institution changes that can be effected to help these healthcare professionals the tools they need in order to both provide an understanding of the overall health and wellness of the patient as well as to solicit feedback and improve upon communication strategies to affect such a goal. This emphasis upon communication, feedback, and readiness for change within the institution is necessary to engage the patient himself/herself with the underlying issue that has been discussed at some length above. With regards to the actual communicational changes that can be affected, it is the opinion of this author that the best means to accomplish this will be to provide a greater emphasis on seeking to interact with and draw inference upon the feedback that the patient can provide. Rather than merely running down a standard checklist, the interaction with the patient could necessarily include a few brief questions concerning the means by which the patient views their overall skin health with regards to whatever situation has brought them to the hospital in the first place. Naturally, the documentation and inference that this could provide could easily help the hospital or healthcare entity in question to provide backup documentation to deal with whatever misgivings or refusals that they may experience from an insurer at a later time. Although none of these are a complete means of solving the problem which has been stated, they are cheap and effective means to ensure that the key situation awareness of the patient’ s overall health is well documented and understood by all shareholders within the process. Moreover, although the time of the healthcare professional is already stretched to a high degree, it must be understood that the requirements that have herein been enumerated upon will necessarily require him/her to spend a few more moments of time with the patient. Yet, it is the belief of this student that such a process would and could easily pay off in the long run.
