"Understanding Dyslexia: A Guide for Teachers and Parents by Dennis Lawrence" is an engrossing example of a paper on the disorder. Literacy is one of the world’ s greatest weapons against impunity and the driving force towards a better and more sustainable society. One of the issues that affect the spread of literacy is dyslexia. Stated as a disorder that impairs a person’ s ability to read, I sort to look for a book that focused entirely on this condition and I found Understanding Dyslexia: a Guide for Teachers and Parents as a very informative book on the topic.

From going through the book, I was able to gain an in-depth understanding of the disease and various issues involving it. The first chapter of the book discussed the history of the disease where I found out that Oswald Berkhan discovered it in the year 1881 (Lawrence 7). Denis Lawrence, the author of the book goes further to describe characteristics of the disease that I found very edifying in that it may help people with relatives or friends with the condition recognize the problem.

Comparing the disease with other learning difficulties is also another interesting concept incorporated by Denis in his book to assist in the identification of the disease. Further reading the book, I found a chapter that clearly discussed dyslexia in relation to young children. Over the years, the condition has occurred more in young children than in adults. This hence makes it important to address the manner through which children with the disease ought to receive quality education (Lawrence 54). The fact that the book advocated the opening of specialized education was inspirational; however, I found this rather unappealing provided the shortage of funds and the difficult economic times we are going through.

I find that Denis would have made a better point had he offered an economical way to teach these children or offered a fair healthcare financial plan on the issue of specialized institutions. The book also talked about the issue of self-esteem on the dyslexic child. The fact that dyslexia is a condition that makes it rather difficult for a student to bear fluency and precision in terms of reading makes the victims rather vulnerable to a lot of stigmas induced by fellow students.

The criticism may make them feel like outcasts and consequently stimulate a negative attitude towards their school life. From reading the book, I was able to understand that it is the role of two forces to ensure that these children have an average education. One of the forces is the teacher who is supposed to motivate the child at school. The second force is the parent from a home-based perspective encouraging and inspiring the kid positively (Lawrence 108).

The other important aspect that I drew from the book is regarding the attitude that society portrays towards dyslexia. From going through the tenth chapter, I was able to understand that adults with dyslexia have a difficult time getting jobs in the formal sector. This is from the fact that many employers have the trepidation of recruiting a worker who is not glib in reading and writing. The book helped me understand the importance of having people suffering from the condition in the job sector from the fact that they carry out tremendous works and may serve as inspiration for other people to work harder (Lawrence 138).

Moreover, the book offered a list of great people who achieved a lot even while suffering from the condition and one of them was Albert Einstein. It is important to understand that Dyslexia is a condition that when well contained does not affect the social relations of a person. The book assisted me in understanding a lot about how to deal with people suffering from dyslexia. This book is informative and helped me widen my scope of knowledge in conditions and diseases.
